Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 3)

YEEEEEEEE HHAAAAAAAAAAAWW

A rural Mississippi community is overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases, two weeks after hosting the Neshoba County Fair that drew thousands who lived in cabins, attended shoulder-to-shoulder outdoor concerts and listened to stump speeches — including one by the Republican governor, who decried federal masking guidance as “foolish.”

Until recent days, Reeves had made few public statements about the coronavirus the past few weeks. In his July 29 speech to a conservative crowd at the Neshoba County Fair, Reeves said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave “foolish” and “harmful” advice when it told people to resume wearing masks indoors, even if vaccinated.

“It reeks of political panic so as to appear they are in control,” Reeves said during the outdoor speech. “It has nothing — let me say that again — it has nothing to do with rational science. In Mississippi, we believe in freedom.”

And, much like not getting vaccinated or refusing to wear a mask, harms innocent family members at the same time.

Only a misdemeanor; I think it should be attempted manslaughter.

Hawaii has gone from <50 new cases/day in mid-July to over 1000 new cases today. However, I don’t completely blame the tourists (most of whom are tested or vaccinated) per se, but everything (especially churches, gyms, and restaurants) having opened when our numbers got low, and having stayed open when they rebounded.

Also, our public schools started a week ago and are meeting face-to-face over many objections; already the case count in the schools is over 100.

Meanwhile, we get a demonstration of vaccination working:

I’d disagree that 203 cases is “good” news, but I’d certainly call it “less bad” news, especially for an event that size. It was certainly far better than I was expecting.

The Moderna Vaccine works in young people. Now if only my country would start using it or any of the others for 12-15s.

Ran across this today. Quick explainer on the research behind and history of mRNA vaccines. Might be helpful in discussions with vaccine hesitant folks to know they have been working on them since the 1970’s, and they figured them out pretty much by 2018, just in time.

This is what conservatives consider as winning

A Houston man continues to wait for surgery at Ben Taub Hospital roughly a week after getting shot six times.

“Everybody is really surprised I’m still in this bed a week later,” said Joel Valdez (J.D.)

According to a spokesperson from the Harris Health System, Ben Taub Hospital is currently operating with an ICU at 98% capacity. We’re told 33% of those patients are COVID-related.

Other area hospitals are reporting similar numbers.

It’s a long read, but this article includes a lot of good nuanced discussion on how to understand some of the numbers surrounding breakthough cases and hospitalizations:
