I’d say “ugh ” if the small congregation, of a larger denomination, that I attended as a kid hadn’t been the stalking grounds for two pedophiles, at the same time, both in the leadership. (The second one managed to drop a tractor on his head shortly after his release from jail… but I digress…)
The police check is overkill 99% of the time… but you don’t always see that 1% coming.
We have sent the kids off on canoe trips / camp. Camp is such a super experience for regular city kids, but the specialized camps do so much great work. Kudos to your daughter for stepping up.

The Working With Children check is sometimes a PITA, and as you say, 99% of the time it’s a formality. But it’s not done for the 99%, it’s to find that <1%.
It’s a PITA I’m willing to put up with for the intended result.

A measure of last resort got a major workout during the pandemic. Scientists are now trying to determine whether the benefits outweighed the potential damage to public trust.
Even that one is specific to the BA.1 variant, which has already been overtaken by newer variants. Hopefully it will be helpful but it’s unlikely to be a magic bullet. Dr Paul Offit (a prominent and longtime advocate for vaccinations) is one of the members of the FDA advisory committee who voted against it because he thought the evidence was lacking.
