03 February 2022Highly virulent HIV variant found circulating in Europe
The mutated strain’s effects are more severe, and it is more transmissible — but drugs are still effective against it
Money quote:
The findings, published in Science on 3 February, serve as a reminder that viruses do not always evolve to become less virulent over time. Reports that infections with the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 tend to cause mild COVID-19 symptoms have fuelled the narrative that the virus is becoming less deadly. “This is not how it works,” says Emma Hodcroft, a molecular epidemiologist at the University of Bern. Although HIV and SARS-CoV-2 are different in many ways, “it’s not a given that SARS-CoV-2 will become milder”, Hodcroft says.
It’s worth clicking through, though. Researchers aren’t that worried. And HIV is a buggering bug, anyway.
Also, it’s not airborne. Which would be a real bummer.
ETA: sorry, was trying to lighten the mood with some wordplay, being only equipped with a teutonic sense of humour. What I was probably trying to say:
HIV is a troublesome virus, and we already know how to protect ourselves and others against it. This mutations are troublesome, but I assume they don’t add very much to the problem.
Mostly a warning to not fall asleep on safer sex practices. And yeah, a reminder that the “they all get weaker” myth is just that. I am still not happy about this. Another more infectious version of a virus that has already taken far too many lives. Gods, I hate this timeline.
Rethink that phrasing, maybe?
Tell me you’re an Incel without telling me you’re an Incel.
It’s hard to even imagine. It’s like an entire city, just gone. And it’s not over yet.
Sorry. Tried, transparently. Have a look above.
The problem with Jon Stewart seems to be that he is part of the problem.
Fuck you, Mr. Stewart. I am under no obligation to “engage” with a powerful person who has millions and millions of listeners, is highly influential, and has a track record of making the pandemic worse. Also, as a powerful person, telling the service which enables him that they “cannot have both”, very publicly, and drawing the consequences consistently (hopefully) is “engaging”. This spurred a public debate around the service, and their responsibility. That is the best possible outcome. And increasing the pressure is definitely a good thing.
Seriously. Fuck you, Jon.
