And for good cops, I have to believe that body cameras make their jobs easier, and convictions more likely.
Why weren’t the officers arrested for assault?
Shocked a guy named Colt Black ended up a cop.
You’re new here, aren’t you?
Colt Black & Travis Worley would be a perfect name for a country & western duo. Y’know, since policing is clearly not working out.
It is common for ‘internal investigations’ to result in no consequences for officers accused of wrongdoing, especially if the incident doesn’t involve death of a non-cop.
These investigations must be conducted outside of the control of both the department involved and the DA’s office in order for them to actually work. In addition, it would seem to be proper to require any restitution to be paid by the union of the department involved. Perhaps we should also require all LEOs to obtain & maintain a professional license in order to carry a gun. Too many hits on your license, & no one will want to hire you… kind of like having a Commercial Driving License.
And the departments should be required to carry insurance to pay against abuse claims with the caveat that premiums come out of their budget.
So, his excuse is that his perception was altered by the high stress that he himself created. That’s close to being the “Twinkie Defense”.
That… or @dpease gifted BBS the greatest ever sarcastic post.
For sure
Truly horrifying to contemplate how many people are behind bars today because there was no recorded evidence to refute the cops’ story.
Roaming gangs of cops going house to house in Lake Wales smashing anything that looks like a camera. /s
Colt Black? What a waste of a fabulous name. This guy is not simply an embarrassment to the idea of Law Enforcement; he’s an embarrassment to Movie Cops too.
The fact that the Accused had to go and carry out his own investigation makes it sound like American Law Enforcement is slipping back in to the 1800s; except with the Lake Wales PD taking the place of some desperado. What would have happened if Chris Cordero had been remanded in custody awaiting his trial?!
Officer Black (“Colt” to his friends) can only be a character in an undergraduate film school screenplay
but what does that make us
And Americans don’t see a connection between everyday local authoritarianism and repressive government, perhaps because they have never lived under a dictatorship. If a cop stops you and demands to see ID for no reason, that’s just a cop doing what cops do; it’s not the start of a slippery slope to tyranny.
(Was it Ann Coulter who advocated “a little local fascism”?)
And why no charges for bearing false witness, or falsifying official documents, or whatever it’s called?
Agreed. Every once in a while good defense attorneys can get whole batches of past convictions thrown out or commuted if they were shown to be based primarily on the testimony of a cop or jailhouse snitch who was later proven to be a serial liar. Here’s hoping that’s the case in this instance, although I certainly wouldn’t bet on it. Usually judges only take such arguments seriously when it’s about major crimes like murders.
and from the article:
Worley, named “Officer of the Year” in 2019 and past president of the Lake Wales Police Officers Association, has been the subject of four citizen complaints and two internal investigations, including two allegations saying he used racial slurs
he was suspended once for 8 hours without pay. that sure showed him
They both should have been fired and their POST certification revoked for life. We need to stop bad cops from getting hired by other departments.
