Who needs insurance anyway? The Cybertruck is flawless and indestructible!
What is it the kids say now?
“Oh, no! … anyway…”
I’ve seen a few news stories about this in the last couple of days but ultimately they all seem to source this Reddit post as the original source of information. Is there any more substantial reporting on this yet? Seems like major news outlets would be able to verify this pretty quickly, if true.
Semi-related, on my company’s internal message board, somebody was complaining bitterly that the sprinkler system got water spots on his “car.” Now, our internal message board is often filled with nonsense and not-real complaints, but this seemed particularly strange…and then a lightbulb went off. He didn’t say it, but he has a Cybertruck. That’s the only vehicle I’m aware of that is actually damaged by a light mist. Their owners don’t seem to be much more robust than the vehicles themselves.
Sounds like that truck is a snowflake. Just like the people who buy them.
Keeping a stainless steel refrigerator spot-free is difficult enough. Who would want an entire truck made out of it. Let alone on a truck capable of severing your fingers by closing a door.
I’ve commented before on the phenomenon of insurance companies deciding to get out of the insurance business. In cases where someone engages in stupid behaviour – like buying waterfront property in Miami or smoking cigarettes or buying a cybertruck – the decision makes sense.
Is that a direct quote from Elon’s Xitter account?
And I/we are in Massachusetts. I’m happy when I get to work without potholes turning the rims of my tires into pretzels. If I had a car that couldn’t get damp, I’d lose my mind.
I saw a Deplorean (Cybrtrrrrrrrk) on a flatbed tow truck. both ends were banged up. Not majorly, but, on on of THOSE, it was going to be a serious repair. I’ve heard that repairs on them are going to take months, so I understand why insurance companies are dumping them.
I’ve seen 4 irl CTs in the Hudson Valley and Long Island and 3 of them were wrapped.
“I’m melting! Oh, who would have thought a small amount of liquid would ever fall on mee–?”
The last one I saw in Portland had a wrap - the owner was some sort of marble finishing contractor, and the wrap was a faux white marble textured appearance.
It really made me appreciate the original stainless steel look.
There’s one near me in NH that’s owned by a Trump-ish TexMex restaurant that’s wrapped in lime green. Gotta love business expense tax write-offs…
I recently saw a commercial for the new Hummer EV. My first thought (following the obligatory WTF?!?) was wondering if it’s trying to be the anti-Cybertruck. Or at least a less-gaudy competitor…
Saw one of those in the wild this last Caturday; It’s… Meh. But unlike the CT, there’s an actual car company backing it, along with that institutional knowledge of how to make a vehicle. (although it’s had it’s teething problems, like any first generation vehicle.)
Considering how many insurance companies refuse to cover the Cybertruck, I wonder if there are regions where owners can’t get insurance… and whether in some states which legally require you to have your car insured, that makes driving one of these big silver MAGA hats actually illegal.
Doesn’t Tesla itself offer insurance? I’m going to guess that’s going to end up being the only provider.
Updated Monday October 7, 2024 10:45 a.m. EST - Jalopnik received a statement from Geico confirming that “some customers may have received notices stating that PPA insurance would not be renewed for this vehicle.” The insurer added that it will be reaching out to impacted customers.
Huh, I didn’t know this. Wonder what the rationale is.
Progressive downright REFUSES to insure any Teslas for new customers in NY.
