Yeah, after seeing that photo, Iā€™ve been trolling through youtube watching videos on places that have gotten mined. Itā€™sā€¦ Really depressing. And outrage fodder. It makes me ashamed to be an American that even decades later people are still getting their legs blown off in Vietnam from leftover mines that nobody bothered to note down on maps.

Thereā€™s only a few weapons that are worse than mines, and we donā€™t even use those. Things like dirty bombs, and long-lived chemical warfare agents like Sarin.

Man, I managed to depress myself all day. And this is supposed to be a game thread.

Twice as much danger than we originally thought

Ah, yes I remember driverā€™s ed. We had to watch many hours of video of people being horrifically killed in auto accidents. It was actually a bit traumatizing. Especially since it was mostly real footage. Motorcyclists getting some of their body scraped off the pavement, the rest of their body picked out of semitruck wheelwells, that kind of thing.

The best one I ever saw had Bernard Bresslaw at the absolute nadir of his career, dressed as a schoolboy being exposed to all the hazards available in a chemistry lab (they blew him up a lot). Sadly, the youtubes appear not to have it. I wonder if the BFI has a copy. Iā€™d love to find one.

But were your drivers ed videos presented by a predatory paedophile?

Nah, the dude who ran the place was like, 22 years old, and really didnā€™t want to be there. He didnā€™t lecture or interact with us a single minute other than to hand out a workbook, start the VCR at exactly 7PM, and sit motionless wearing the neutral mask for the fifteen minute driving test. The driving course advertised on ā€œindependent study, at oneā€™s own pace, 99% graduation rateā€.

I was a low achieving high school student dedicated to wasting his potential. I was semi-pro at that.

It sounds like it was a lot more fun than Robbie was

I thought maybe it was a radioactive crosswalk for pirates.

Which one was first? My SO actually has (and wears) this shirt.

That first one is from Ann Arbor. We had a rather defensive goose on north campus this summer.

see, the trick is to punch or drill a hole into the top, then you can make a hook out of a wire and grab the corkscrew things that dispense the goodies with it. pull them upward and the product slides right out.

you can work from below, too, but limited in height to the width of the dispensary door. slightly bend the theft guard on the door, slide a stick up there and push the screw things upward. if thereā€™s roll-up blinds in that room, the wooden slats in the hand-pull end work great and can be re-stashed.

I can no longer condone doing this, of course. but these techniques, which i learned for kicks, ended up helping keep me fed for a few years in my late teens/early twenties.
