And yet I’d bet the Secret Service didn’t care one bit about people’s almighty Second Amendment rights when they forbade anyone bearing arms from attending the rally, right? When are Trump and Musk going to take a stand against the Secret Service for infringing so strongly on the only right they seem to give a damn about? /s

When that sort of arsehole starts talking about free speech in the context of guns, it’s usually in the same context as the “third box”. That is, democracy is defended first with a soapbox, then with a ballot box, then with an ammo box.
And they are really keen to use the first box to talk about how they’re about to break out the third if the second doesn’t give them everything they demand.

Nuh, they were first. The Dark Brandon meme is based on similar memes of Trump that already existed at the time. It’s good to see, though, that Biden’s team was so effective that people don’t even remember that anymore.
Usually it’s the other way round, with the far right coöpting words from the left and centre until nobody remembers that they used to have an actual innocent meaning (woke, fake news, etc.)

Separate from “Let’s Go Brandon,” extreme-right memers had been evolving a harder aesthetic from the original testosterone-laced Trump memes. “Dark MAGA” (or “DarkMAGA”) is a subgenre of right-wing memeing that’s aesthetically more nihilistic than even the typical ironic Trumpist meme. It’s like the “gritty” DCU version of a far-right meme ideology; now even edgier and more explicitly tailored for Nazis. Dark MAGA memes typically feature lots of neo-Nazi symbolism and violent, white supremacist and accelerationist messaging — think: swastika backgrounds, images of Trump as a violent dictator, and fascist rhetoric.
One of the sources linked there gives a good overview over Dark MAGA pre-Dark Brandon. Note that it is pretty explicitly neonazi, whatever that says about Leon’s embrace of it…
The first appearance of the phrase ‘Dark MAGA’ was tweeted on 21 January 2022. In the creator’s recollection, he was alone at a bar when the words popped into his head. Later, reflecting in a live chat on Twitter on 19 March 2022, the same poster described the concept of Dark MAGA as “Napoleon, being exiled, and then raising a fucking army to attack Europe to attack the elites.” This vengeful leader, having lost power, forced to cede control, and then returning with wrathful determination, is the underpinning of this wave. Another Dark MAGA influencer added, “if you want to win, if you don’t want to repeat the past, you have to get mean; you almost have to embrace the villain role that they’re bringing you with.”
