Death metal flautist

I was so happy to see him leap out from behind a tree in the Norwegian forest!

I think it’s the contrast that makes it interesting. That folky flute part would be nice on its own, but I think it’s a heck of a lot more interesting stitched into this song where it wouldn’t have been thought to belong.

In a broadly very similar vein, Berg’s and Gubaidulina’s violin concertos both have bits of Bach chorales in them, and Schnittke’s Third String Quartet has lots of quotations from older music including Renaissance tunes, and in each case the tension between these very different kinds of music in the same composition is just fascinating.

I’m in to Old Folk Metal; or Zimmer as we call it.

And then here is Andrews follow up video.

Ironically, the flute is made of metal, and the guitars aren’t.

If you’ve got it, flaut it.

For this music I think all the parts of the guitar that actually matter are metal too.

Can’t tell y’all how long it took me to see that the person on the right wasn’t a dog wagging their tail.

Ironically, tin resonator guitars: not metal.

Guitars with pointy wooden bodies: totally metal

I think it’s the lead singers death growl technique that swings people toward the death metal category.
