Indeed. A tweet I’ve seen yesterday: “at this point I’m all for #brexit for no reason than to f*%# shit up”. It’s just not possible to constructively engage with people on those grounds.
So just like the Presidential campaign in the US?
The real tragedy is that they are being led to believe that the UK legal/political (adversarial/two party) system would produce a radically different regulatory framework from European inquisitorial/multiparty consensual systems. To trade in the real world any system would produce broadly similar results.
The fight which some seem to be spoiling for is what it means to be English which could be messy as unlike the
Americans who have the revolution and constitution as a starting point we cannot even agree where to begin.
There seem to be two 16th century senses of the free Englishman - the buccaneering explorer in the service of the monarch and the free yeoman enjoying his roast beef, pint of ale and pipe (with a strong underlying anarchist streak) who if left to his own devices without government (or corporate interference) will make the right decisions for his own and others’ wellbeing, mixed with a third - the bloody-minded binge drinking Anglo-Saxon.
The angry white men appear to be angry at the failure of senses one and three with no remaining memory of sense number two.
Wow. How did Trump voters find their way to England??
The UK has a long, rich history of “fucking shit up”.
Absolutely true, but I guess it’s people’s tendency to select the irrational, hateful, and easily disproved falsehoods that I find discouraging.
People seek evidence to support the views they find most comfortable, rather than risk discomfort assessing the quality of that information.
Critical thinking skills need to be taught early and often!
I can’t watch his good stuff when I consider how much time he devotes to his bullshit crusade. Hell it can be hard to watch his good stuff. He has the annoying propensity to repeat the same clips over and over again in various contexts in a way that’s incredibly grating, and doesn’t work as well as he thinks it does to drive the point home.
Actually, his science, anti-creationist, and sexist video’s often contradict each other and are full of logical fallacies. Just the fact that he has a series of video’s aimed at “taking down” feminism and a series of video’s making fun of religion makes me very skeptical in believing anything this guy has to say on other subjects. Especially over the very (and I do mean very) good series this article links to.
Seriously, fuck saving time and spend the roughly 1 hour to listen to the BBC series. It’s unbiased, clear, and informative.
edit: I got through about half of the video and boom blatant racism about something that the Brexit will actually not change. Seriously, ignore Thunderfoot’s ranting style of sensationalism and just listen to the BBC’s fine series.
I know shockingly little about this debate (not being British or European), but the more I learn about it, the more I realize how the results of this vote will effect me (and pretty much the entire world). If Britain votes to leave, then that’s pretty much the end of the EU. That in turn will cause massive upheaval in the world’s economy. So, I may not have a say in the vote, but I do have a stake in it. (Not entirely different from the US election.)
It’s not that grim. If the UK votes leave it will not be the end of the EU, though some other countries might join the UK and also leave. It will have a global impact, though, if experts are to be believed. Just the uncertainty of the vote’s outcome is visible in the financial markets, so a “leave” would have a direct impact there. Basically any country that does business with the UK will see a financial hit, which won’t make the UK very popular internationally.
