America’s corporate media outlets are heavily invested in the narrative that every race between the duopoly parties must be definition be a dramatic near-run thing. It’s borderline Bothsidesism.

My sense is that it’s compensation for their knowledge that, on a national popular scale, the GOP is on the wane. By cherry-picking local elections in the way Rob describes, they can keep up the pretense that both parties are equally popular across the board. A Dem win in a big city, in contrast, is not exciting news without turning it into a photo-finish race.
It’s the same reason they don’t talk about the fact that, outside their strongholds, Republicans can’t win without cheating and gaming the system. If gerrymandering is discussed, for example, it’s presented as a both-parties problem.

Exactly. Major outlets have been for quite some time, but they struggle to maintain the illusion of impartiality while stifling all attempts to call them out on it. No matter what criticism comes up they just keep using the same tactics. The owners of those outlets won’t care if we wind up with a single state news source (since they have other ways to profit). I keep rolling my eyes at how many used the words this candidate “appears to have won” and “narrow” is the term of choice to describe Democrats’ control of the PA House.

It’s worth noting that Inamorato, the person who vacated this seat, did so because she is going to be the Allegheny County Executive, replacing an old-school, businesses-are-more-important-than-people, traditional Democrat. She’s very progressive. While the system will limit what reforms she can make, the cities in PA are swinging farther and farther left.
