Unenforceable; good luck trying.

Is this the time to remind everyone that the communards burned the Paris guillotine?

Not only unenforceable, but how isn’t this a freedom of speech issue? If it were any other Supreme Court that would ultimately decide this issue, the law would be declared such and ordered suspended pending a full hearing before the ink was dry. I half expect this court to double down and declare that only Republicans can use social media, and then only if they’re Trump supporters.

Remember when the GOP used to whine about Democrats wanting to run a nanny state?

Seems like it.

It requires them to use a third-party verification system to screen out those who are underage.

idle curiosity: does anyone know how these ‘third-party age verification’ systems work? does it ask questions only a 15 year old would know? (“name three actors from Game of Thrones”) or pinkie swear you’re at least 15 or …?

Ah yes the party of - checks notes - small government??? That can’t be right.

  1. Probably want to limit kids interactions on social media until they are a little older, but kids at 14 are probably using discord and other programs to chat with friends.

  2. What kids are allowed to do should be primarily up to the parents, not the government (with this topic, at least.)

  3. On the internet, no one knows you’re a dog, much less a 13 year old. I don’t see how you can really enforce this.

I’m picturing sending personally identifying data to a company who doesn’t believe in data security. Nothing could go wrong there, right?

Maybe Facebook does what Pornhub did and nopes out of Florida.

I’m too lazy to look it up, but what problem (for the Fascists) is this supposed to address, and what problem does it pretend to address?

kids learning something beyond what the state says they can learn.

Nah. They’re too greedy for that.

If I were in control of a major social media firm, I would be mighty tempted to say “OK, we won’t accept any connections from an IP address that looks like it comes from Florida.” After all, that would be the only way to be sure that you were in compliance with this law, right?

I’d say not just this in general, but given the bill is aimed at social media, I think cutting kids off from LGBTQ safe spaces and places they can share their experiences or ask for help.

Exactly. Cutting kids off from anything not government approved. Like a small government conservative should, of course.

Yeah, because Facebook is why there are gay and trans people. Without social media, everyone will be straight, Christian, and white within 5 years. /s

Facebook will nominally take your word for it unless you start screwing around with your age or trigger it’s verification system; then it will lock you out of the account until you upload a state issued ID.

Indeed; I’d rather be dipped in angry bees then give Zuckerberg any more information than absolutely needed.

Ironic, DeSantis pushing a law to keep kids off Truth Social.

Can we instead ban accounts people create for their pets? THAT, I could get behind.
