I used to joke during my Urban Planning undergrad that the degree could be summed up with the phrase “everything in cities is about money and who has it”. During my graduate work I added that “everything that doesn’t make sense with just money is because of race”. If you line up an old redlining map in a lot of cities with almost any negative outcome map it tracks really well.
