The first humans projected to live to 200 were born in 1960, now, that’s probably the purview of a billionaire, born to billionaires, with healthcare on that level throughout their lives but 2160 is going to look very different from 1960 and very, very different from 1760… another 150 years of relative stability is going to fruit some pretty advanced technologies, especially after the advent of super-intelligence, or any of its preceding technologies have started to spin up the research and technological development cycles… don’t I think even us common folk are likely to see some pretty fabulous tech if we can stay healthy?

Don’t I agree that all this ‘10 years’ nonsense is just ruining what could be a Quite Interesting conversation?

(looks like the only real path forward in brain imaging as of now would be to either grow a brain around trillions of tiny electrodes or to grow the electrodes into a brain… sounds a little mad-sciencey though eh? Where’s @shaddack?)

Thought. What about some nanoparticles that’d be friendly to extremely high resolution imaging, and change some observable state (EPR resonance?) based on the neuron activity? EPR imaging can reach micrometer resolution, though I am not sure how it would work with bulk matter. The temporal resolution in that mode is in the range of seconds. If we’d get micrometer resolution even in significant depth, and temporal resolution to at least milliseconds, we could potentially observe individual neurons.

The nanoparticles would then serve as de facto neuron-state-dependent contrast agent.

Sorry to be a broken record, but even if you are a billionaire and get pancreatic cancer aren’t you still not gonna make it to 200 (hell, statistically not even six months)?* Don’t we have a huuuge gap in understanding what life Is let alone How it works untill we get to demi-god stage?

Again, not to be cynical, but can I get a call when we have determined whether addiction is actually a good or bad thing, and if it is bad how to treat it more than 18% of the time?

  * my grandad died of pancreatic cancer, and I just came home with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (treatable).

Sorry about your grandad, pancreatic cancer is terrible… but to your question about those who contract it, I would say, yeah, that’s very bad for them, even billionaires with massive resources but the easy antipode to that line of thought is, ‘what about the billionaires that don’t get fatally ill before they get very old’?

And really, my point is that the timescale question is really the central point of importance in the whole discussion… are we really going to extend our rational scepticism to technological developments over the course of an accelerating trend which stands to make previous developments pale in comparison?

Well certainly, and isn’t this likely the most exciting time to be alive? I am debating deep issues affecting humanity, on a phone, while doing my day job on a phone, slurping miso soup and sketching out bunker plans for wine and cheese–is this not the future? :smile:

I bellyache a lot (heh, literally), and I am exceedingly sceptical, but isn’t it nice to appreciate the wonders we have?
