It appears to be a thing brought out in the open after an ugly situation by a rich guy.
The other take away that sums up why people make these requests is this.
It’s more often a desperate attempt to exert power over someone to make yourself feel like a Big Important Person.

Apart from diet water, these seem normal enough to me. Usually I just order a single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man’s hat from room service.
