According to wikipedia he was in a lot of roles at PacBell, including programmer. Which probably contributed to the problem–he thinks he can do everything.

And in reality he was shunted from one job to the other once people realised he wasn’t all that good at what he was supposed to do, I guess. He seems to have been the actual inspiration for his Dilbert Principle that incompetent people are promoted faster to get them out of where they can do harm. Just not self aware enough to realise it.

Not for the first time, I’m feeling smug, in a highly petty way 
, about the fact that I’ve always fucking hated Dilbert.
It should be right in my wheelhouse for multiple reasons, but I recoiled the very first moment I saw it… even when he gets hold of a good solid satirisable concept, it’s just so goddamn flat, so loveless, so workmanlike. It’s like the polar opposite of Calvin and Hobbes.
