Can’t they tell it’s not alive due to lack of a smell/heartbeat?

A few months ago I was at an outdoor puppet festival in Los Angeles and the marionette dogs there definitely were not fooling the real dogs, which took very little interest in them and focused on sniffing the other real dogs that were in attendance. It took about 4 seconds before they lost interest in the marionettes.
