I think it’s been proven again and again that it is indeed possible for a profoundly stupid person to achieve such status.

Michael Wolff’s 2018 book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House included an anecdote from when Republican leaders and strategists were first meeting with him in Mar-a-Lago to get a sense of whether he had any real potential as a candidate. It quickly became clear he didn’t even realize his pro-choice stance on abortion would be an issue for Republicans. Of course it also became immediately clear that he’d reverse himself in a heartbeat because he ultimately believes in nothing except his own greatness.

If this stance is “seemingly more lenient,” that’s only because the Overton window has shifted so far right that statements we would have described as extreme just a few years ago almost seem normal now. Here’s part of his latest statement:

He’s explicitly talking about conservative states basing their abortion laws on religion, and that’s supposed to be a “lenient stance”?

Who believes ANYTHING this moronic, criminal asshole has to say?

Anyone who will base their vote on abortion access will not believe him and would understand that we can’t leave this issue up to individual states.

Anyone who won’t base their vote on abortion access isn’t going to pay attention to his view on the issue

His core base will either believe him, and get pissed off, or (more likely) say he is being cunning.

But the christo-fascists following him because he will get them what they want, rather than truly liking him, will be pissed off by this.

Also, this is a great thing for every reporter to start asking every GOP candidate. Let them choose between disagreement with Trump or pissing off their christo-fascist voting base.

“States should have the final say in abortion law” is exactly what the pro-life movement has been fighting to achieve for generations. It’s not a remotely pro-choice stance because they believe, and not without reason, that they can enact anti-abortion legislation at the state level. They want abortion treated like murder—which is also prosecuted at the state level.

Whatever this was, it wasn’t the words “I would veto a national abortion ban” or “I would sign a bill protecting abortion nationally”.

The “will of the people” could easily be “congress sent me a bill, must be the will of the people” no matter how unpopular with people it really is.

I think banning at state level, and murder charges at state level, were just one step for the forced birthers. They will not settle for anything less than a national ban. You can see this in the talking points and meeting notes from the forced birther orgs like Susan B Anthony pro-Life America. And now they’ve released a statement saying they want a national ban

It was always the plan to
+Restrict and burden in every state as much as possible until Roe was overturned
+Corrupt the judiciary to facilitate these laws and overturning Roe
+Then ban everywhere possible with new laws, trigger-laws, or ancient zombie laws
+Then enact a national ban

After that, or simultaneously, is banning birth control, emergency contraception, and IVF. Once they have a national ban, then they will push for laws making abortion murder and aiding an abortion a felony as well. At the state level first then nationally for any abortion crossing state lines or touching on other federal areas of jurisdiction.

This was always the plan. It was never intended to stop at the state level.

TODAY: Biden announces major action on student debt relief.

What’s in the news?

Trump’s shifting abortion stance, Trump suing his judge, Trump’s fundraising claims.

TOMORROW: Look for another story about how voters don’t feel like Biden’s done anything.

See how this works?
