Dumbest Rep. Louie Gohmert was excited to find the solution to gun massacres: more thoughts and prayers (video)

That’s some cargo cult-level bullshit right there, if you have to keep praying to God so that he won’t send someone to shoot up your school. What Bible are these people reading?

Weird that far more secular countries, like the UK and Sweden, don’t have school shootings.

I don’t think it’s fair to call Louie “dumbest”. After all, there are all those fine people who voted for him.

Sigh – they never banned prayer from school. You can even have religious based student lead clubs like the FCA. You just can’t have school lead prayers.

And if cursing God to damn Louie Gohmert hasn’t worked, I don’t think praying will help either way either.

East Texas is far West Louisiana. Not a place to be proud of.

Perhaps there are some who are merely profoundly ignorant and I judge those too harshly; but my impression of the people who harp on ‘taking the prayer out of schools’ has always been that they simply do not recognize a meaningful distinction between the abolition of compulsory majoritarian prayer and the abolition of prayer in general.

He’s definitely a JAG-off now.

We really, as a species, don’t have any time left to waste on superstitions if we want to survive the next few dozen years. Not bringing them up as though they’re serious solutions to any problems, anyway. It feels like all of us are working on a collective species-wide thesis that’s due very soon, but people like Gohmert still haven’t gotten around to learning the alphabet yet.

Or ignoring how according to the Bible, God gave us the tools to solve problems without waiting for Him to take a break from his otherwise busy schedule to directly intervene?

Christ, what an asshole.

Yes, lack of prayer in the school must be the answer.

Tell that to the black people gunned down in a grocery store.
Tell that to the women gunned down in a family planning clinic
Tell that to the worshipers gunned down in a Christian church
Tell that to the worshipers gunned down in a Jewish synagogue
Tell that to the patrons gunned down in a movie theater

A reminder to all of us: it is harder and more devastating when its our children being brutally slaughtered in these mass shootings. But never EVER let them make the focus about schools alone, because Louie and others will make it about their vengeful God, and about turning our schools into prisons and build yet another useless private industry that sucks billions from our tax dollars for dubious results.

“It’s not really prayer if you don’t force everybody to say the words together!”

The evangelicals do not know this Jesus they claim to follow.

That’s because even that is a lie. I don’t believe for a second that they actually keep the victims in their thoughts or their prayers.

Maybe it would work? We will never know.

Right-wingers can come up with all the childish rationales they want to pretend they’re not hypocrites. That should lead us to conclude not that their rationales have any merit but that they’re not worth debating at all.

Oh, I know. It’s a bad idea that I’d never actually want implemented. Thought it’s super-frustrating to not be able to convince what is clearly an electoral majority that the GOP—and Gohmert in particular—is offering up “solutions” that absolutely won’t work, and consistently arguing that they will in entirely bad faith.

if prayer works so well for mr. gohmert, perhaps he should accept thoughts and prayers instead of cold, hard cash for his salary and bribes, i mean, contributions.

If thoughts and prayers are so effective, how about using those to end abortion and leave the courts out of it?

GOP stupidity is just… so fucking exhausting. Especially since so much of it is deliberate.

I mean, all the GOP response to gun violence has been idiotic, but so many seem to be seem to be trying to out-stupid each other. Steve Scalise comparing shootings to 9/11, saying that we didn’t have a debate about banning planes, despite the fact that they were used to kill thousands of people… As if we didn’t completely transform transportation without debate as a result - and often arbitrarily banning people from flying on planes entirely, without due process, for example.

And the stupidity is often wrapped up in advancing fascism. I think what Gohmert Pile is getting at here, is that if only the state indoctrinated kids in (his) religion, they’d have the moral sense not to mass murder people. Because (his) religion is the only source of morality, and thus justifies forcibly indoctrinating/converting people.
