That is a fair appraisal, but in the early 2000s Detroit was treated like Chicago is now in right-wing media. It wasn’t about murders vs gun laws, but about the racial divisions in the city. Eventually Detroit got in too bad a spot for it to be beaten up by the media (there was a lot of positive media reversing the course of the right-wing spin) and they moved on to St. Louis and Chicago.
Under questioning from Elizabeth Warren, Ben Carson has refused to rule out giving HUD money to directly benefit Trump or his businesses.
The racial and socioeconomic divisions in Detroit are really awful, and they deserve to be brought to light. These divisions are enforced and practically codified. There is an actual physical wall between Detroit and Grosse Pointe. Plus. industry leaving Detroit hasn’t helped matters any.
Still, I have concern for Detroit. The right-wing media, on the other hand, is walking around with a giant woody because a city of a million people is destroying itself.
Yep. You should see how people treated me for not being afraid to walk around the city or use public transportation versus sticking to Cobo or Greektown or Comerica Park/Ford Field. I used to go to the museums, eat at the “black” restaurants, etc. and was treated like I have a deathwish.
And history shows it, starting with Reagan.
History shows it starting with the Fugitive Slave Act. That’s pre-Republican, though.
In American politics, “state’s rights” has always been used as a hypocritical defence for evil.
Ben Carson has refused to rule out giving HUD money to directly benefit Trump or his businesses.
What the actual fuck!!!
As not-great as it is, the original exchange didn’t specify “directly” benefiting Trump. The actual question was
"Can you assure me that not a single taxpayer dollar that you give out will financially benefit the President elect or his family?"
Which is kind of an interesting question, because it is less relevant to Carson’s role with HUD, and more serves to highlight that Trump’s real-estate interests leave him in a position to make quite a lot of money as the president.
Warren was highlighting Trump’s conflict of interest. Carson was avoiding putting himself in the middle of the fight between Warren & Trump. I still don’t think he’s qualified to be HUD secretary, but his answer is fairly sensible under the circumstances - the alternative would be to make HUD responsible for the president’s conflicts of interest.
