Trains from 100 years ago only went around 40 mph on their runs and were extremely heavy, inefficient, and had high centers of gravity which limited their speed. The tracks also had issues, limiting their speed further. That changed in 1933 when the Budd Company built the lightweight Pioneer Zephyr and subsequent streamliner trains with top speeds of 100 mph+.
