Elon Musk sued by cave rescuer he called a "child rapist" then dared to sue

No hills here, women have been noticing creepers for as long as humanity has existed. Of course there are plenty of predators who come off as perfectly nice people and are not redialy obvious, but that doesn’t mean the others don’t stand out like a sore thumb.

*sighs

I’m really gonna need you to not mansplain sexual objectification to me; I’ve only been living with it my whole life, by ‘virtue’ of being female.

Thanks.

That said:

The tedious topic at hand is Musk, and his unsubstantiated claim that Unsworth is a pedophile.

To my understanding, at no point was Musk ever actually in a position to physically observe Unsworth “gazing longingly” at any children.

Furthermore, it’s not like Musk caught the man with child porn in his possession or something, which would be another matter entirely if he had.

And yet again, there’s the matter of his apology.

If you honestly think someone is diddling little kids you don’t apologize… you don’t speculate about it on twitter… you get the fucking authorities involved, STAT.

Bottom line:

After being insulted, Musk made a very damaging accusation without offering even a modicum of any proof… but just because it’s Elon Musk, OMG! …and because Unsworth happens to live in Thailand, that somehow automatically makes the accusation credible?

I’m moving on now; this conversation is pointless and I’m over it.

I don’t recall anybody asking Musk to come there and do anything.

Maybe the guy looked like Mr Swirl Face?

You weren’t paying attention then, you really think he literally showed up uninvited? They contacted him in the first place, after he had been asked on Twitter to get involved he initially replied that they probably had it under control:

He then spitballed some ideas with other Twitter users, there was obviously enough visibility on that thread that led to someone in the Thai government putting him in touch with the head of the dive team. He repeatedly double checked with that guy, Stanton, that his help was needed, got the sub designed, tested and sent out in just a few days.

By the time they got over there though the rescue team were already implementing the main rescue effort, and things were going easier than planned. It might still have been required if the situation took a turn for the worse, but luckily everything went smoothly. Everyone except Unsworth seemed appreciative though, and the Thai SEALs even asked to hang onto the sub for future use.

Hmm still sounds like not much more than your typical rich white man savior bullshit.

Ah yes, that common trope of billionaires and rocket scientists building mini subs at the request of humanitarian rescue efforts, so typical.

It’s one thing to begrudge people their wealth when they spend it on mansions and fancy sport cars, utterly bizarre to do so when they devote their resources to charity and actually helping the world.

Can we begrudge them their wealth when they act like some weird permutation of a petty child and a belligerent drunk on Twitter?

Too late, I’m begrudging it right now.

We can certainly think they’re assholes, not sure what being wealthy has to do with that, being an asshole on the internet is free. But that wasn’t what we were talking about, there are things that he deserves criticism for, and things that he doesn’t. This thread has had more than enough of the latter unfortunately.

Nope. Not nearly enough of the latter.

Wait, is that what I mean? Eh, close enough. If Musk doesn’t like the unfair criticism he’s getting here, he’s got a number of options. He can accuse us all, without the faintest justification, of what’s widely considered the vilest crime a person can commit. Or maybe he can just cry himself to sleep on top of his massive pile of money.

Usually turns out to be strabismus.

So you’re in favour of ignorant smears? Nice to know. It’s pretty clear from the available evidence that he was being genuinely helpful in this situation, and that his help was explicitly and clearly requested. People love to hate him though recently, so it’s easy to ignore pesky things like facts, people sure do love that sanctimony high.

Nah, more of a case of “post in haste, look like a dumbass at leisure”. That being said,it’s pretty rich someone coming into this thread defending Musk levelling that particular rhetorical question.

That’s true. How are you enjoying yours?

Not at all, seeing as I’m on record calling him out for being an asshole re his own ignorant smear (there’s always the chance he knows something we don’t of course, in which case I’d have to apologise).

sanctimony (countable and uncountable, plural sanctimonies) A hypocritical form of excessive piety, considered to be an affectation merely for public show.

Where’s the hypocrisy?

Huh. I guess I’d conflated you with the other gross Musk stans in this thread leaning heavily on the “he lives in Thailand so that means he’s a child molester!” shtick. I’ll have to beg your pardon on that one.

As to your parenthetical, even if Musk did know something we don’t, he was still being an asshole. There’s a place for accusing people of fucking pederasty, and it’s not “offhandedly, on Twitter”.

I should probably back off from this, though, I think I’m dragging myself around in a circle.

Apology accepted.

That’s not what @burllamb said, he was just offering an explanation of where the slur came from (that it wasn’t just some inexplicable insult), they then said “Not Musk’s finest moment”, so obviously they don’t think he’s a child molester either.

Sorry - there is ZERO evidence he built it as a PR stunt - as I said, there is an e-mail trail showing that the rescue team reached out to him first. Conversations involved specifications. So, he BUILT it to rescue kids.

Delivering it in person definitely WAS for PR. So what? That is how Tesla promotes itself - youtube. The man did something extraordinary, and you want to tear him down for it because it was a PR stunt? Wtf?!?

Get real. The guy was a complete ass to Musk. Musk responded like most people would when someone accuses you sins and tells you to shove something up your ass.

A “full-out slander campaign”? Hardly. If a billionaire really wanted a full-out slander campaign, it wouldn’t look like what it did. It would be thousand times worse. We would have seen a vicious expose into Vernons lifestyle. We would have seen multiple witnesses decrying the insults made upon Musk. Musk did virtually nothing. Stop making shit up.

And frankly, it is the Musk-haters who refused to stop escalating this whole kerfuffle, let’s be honest. Framing it dishonestly from the get go, baiting the question in interviews. It is two guys sniping at each other, ffs. Nobody without an agenda should give a shit.

Naw dogg, it was a PR stunt, just not for Tesla. Someone in the Thai government said “ooh, Elon Musk is looking to help” and leapt at the idea. They probably thought that if shit went sideways they’d have a “not even the brightest minds” response. It’s painfully obvious that Musk wasn’t given the full details of the cave system. He got played.

Making a specific, inflammatory and baseless accusation like “that man is a child rapist” is NOT how a normal person reacts to being treated rudely. Let alone doubling down on the accusation and then daring the individual to sue.
