Well, for a change, he is at least half right.The European Union WAS created to compete with America on the global stage. See, a broken clock is half right maybe once per election cycle.

Trump spouting a bunch of deranged nonsense and attacking Democrats in general and Biden in particular. In other words, a standard campaign event. Seems like blatantly having a campaign event right at the White House would be… against election rules. But I guess we’re not even pretending to follow the law anymore…

To chime in: not really. A bit maybe ECSC was before EEC and Euratom around the same time. US promoted a lot of stuff in Europe, much of which would surprise modern Americans. Like avant garde music (they played both sides of the musique concrete/elektronische musik wars!), unions (non commie ones) and the kind of cross border political cooperation conference’s and youth movement that would have someone like Merkel meeting her counterparts in the west as part of their civic education in politics and peace. It was state building. The thing that the US gave up on elsewhere.
