Here’s an interesting video about the Greek entry, which seems to have divided opinion in Greece.
Reminds me of this documentary… The film maker attempts to pin down the origins of a song each of her friend claims belongs to their ethnic group (in the Balkans).
[ETA] Okay, I did not expect the Heidegger interlude… also, nazis can fuck off.
There appears to be more shit going down
It’s buried in the article, but the Greek and Swiss contestants also didn’t show
Marina Satti might be in trouble over the Thursday press conference.
The Greek performer Marina Satti also appeared to mimic falling asleep when Golan was asked a question by Israeli press.
So I’ve been delving further into what’s going on, and it’s… really something. I will caveat all this with saying that I can’t find solid sources for it, it’s all rumours coming out of Malmo so take it with a pinch of salt:
Apparently the Israeli announcers for the first semi-final said some horrible things about Bambie Thug at the start of their performance -which was why they missed their dress rehersal- and the Israeli press has been attacking the Spanish delegation as well. I’ve heard that the French contestant won’t perform if they can’t give a speech. A bunch of different contestants are threatening to pull out - I’ve heard conflicting reports of who that is. Loreen is refusing to give the trophy is Isreal wins, and a bunch of the people who were going to be presenting the scores are intending to conveniently not be available when they’re meant to go live.
Apparently the Israeli delegation has been recording people without consent…
But hey… Eurovision isn’t political right?
Found an article about the Semi-final stuff:
Yeah, barring Russia last year and starting the show with a medley of peace songs? Apolitical apparently.
I love this stuff, because it really does pull back the curtain on why and how culture is embedded in politics and vice-versa…
Yeah, and it really illustrates how trying to fence-sit angers at least half the people you’re trying to placate.
Well Bambie Thug is still in, they walked out with an Irish flag draped around them, Irish flags sticking out of their boots and a sash that read CROWN THE WITCH.
But that’s what the mass media/culture industries has often attempted to do for its entire history, acting as a neutral arbiter, rather than as a set of industries that has a vested interest in power structures that brings them into being…
And they blurred out Windows 95 Guy’s Windows T-shirt!
I think he’s wearing a shirt with a pixellated logo.
I thought that might be the case, but it seemed not to move with him naturally when he did that little spin.
Looks like they literally dubbed in cheers for the Israeli entry
They didn’t bother trying for the voting, very loud boos from the audience when the Isreali points were announced.
Have they announced a winner yet? The Guardian livefeed said that they were counting the votes?
