Evangelicals "rationalizing" their support of Trump

If I were a Christian, I would probably be inclined to describe Prosperity Gospel churches as Satanic.

It’s a nearly perfect reversal of the supposed teachings of Jesus.

Yeah. I’ve had opportunity to ask a prosperity gospel adherent about that verse going something like:

Do not pray loudly in the streets like the hypocrites, surely they have their reward. Instead to be heard by your father, go to your closet, shut the door and pray secretly.

Needless to say, the prosperity practitioner started yelling at me about how I have satan in my heart.

I just laughed and said “you’re directly disobeying an important command from Jesus. Who’s the rebellious one again?”

Ah, found the verse, Matthew 6:5-6

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

That is…gross and despicable and…not so surprising for that group.

“No, I’m not very devout” means “I live in a part of the country where my family would be mortified if I publicly said I was not of the same religious stripe as them, so I’ll just say I don’t go to church often, but if truth were to be told, I don’t listen when I do go.” If those are the people who support Trump, you should bear in mind that these are the people over whom the Evangelical churches have no influence or control.

These sound like the people who pray to Fox but still consider themselves Christian.

But their god is Lucifer, Mammon, and Beezlebub wearing a hollowed-out Jesus-suit and teaching the importance of Pride, Greed, and Wrath.

Self-ascription is a hell of a drug.

I remember saying a while back that I believed Republican Christians would vote for Satan as long as he had an ® next to his name, and they would still accuse Democrats and the left of being unchristian.

Is Trump close enough for this to be confirmed now?

Lucifer at least has a decent sense of style and diplomacy, as well as a vocabulary exceeding that of a 4th grader.

Why insult 4th graders?

Not entirely joking…most of the ones I’ve known have a greater grasp of reality and language than Mr. Tinyhand Cheetos.

For a moment there I thought you had got Quakers completely mixed up. Ah, wrong Fox.

This view has long legs, and it was expressed somewhat differently by Blake. But it’s SOP for religious group A to accuse religious group B of being under the influence of the Devil, especially when outsiders can’t actually tell the beliefs of A from B. e.g. homoiousin versus homoousin.

He is neither the Messiah nor the Antichrist, he’s a very naughty boy.

 Simply embrace the flavor of Golden Rule that you’d want others to embrace.
