there was a news commentator character in allen drury’s eventually tedious series starting with advise and consent named frankly unctuous. i think he was loosely based on edward r. murrow whom drury detested because of his takedown of the patriot mccarthy.

I heard someone explain this morning that this is likely a move by the faction of GOP in Trump’s world who believes they have a future in politics–this may be an act of petty sabotage to sandbag the Biden administration with the choice to remove harsh sanctions on Iran.

That makes sense. Pompeo is an ambitious chancer with his eye on the top job. He’d see doubling (tripling? quadrupling?) down on Trumps’s bankrupt Iran policy as a strategic win, simultaneously bolstering the image of Muslim boogeymen and planting a timebomb for Joe Biden.
