Explosion in Nashville, Tennessee

Making a false report probably translates to “lying to a police officer”. Tampering with evidence, the speakers, but what crime are they evidence of? This smells like cops throwing charges at him so that they can bust him for being an asshole, let him cool his heels a bit, and then get a strong talking to from a judge,

Unless there’s a new ordinance against 60s pop music? At least he wasn’t playing Beck.

It doesn’t mean that it wasn’t either. We don’t actually know either way at this point, as the investigation is still unfolding. None the less, he did an incredibly amount of physical damage to the city of Nashville and it’s really not outside the realm of possibility that his choice of location had meaning. I’m unsure why there seem to be so many people dismissing that as a possibility right now.

If this had been a Muslim, no one would be speculating if he was just some sad dude who wanted to be noticed. They’d claiming he had a political motive, as he must, being a Muslim. White men, apparently, never have political motives, but it’s all about how they are sad or got teased or ignored, etc. :woman_shrugging:

Well you know, wypipo will spend all day extending the benefit of the doubt to other wypipo.

He apparently spent much of the last year putting his affairs in order. It doesn’t look like he intended to survive this.

Yeah I think that was the police trying to distract the occupant of the bomb while they aimed a laser at his internals, trying to shut him down.

Ha! Which I really don’t get. :woman_shrugging:

Oh sure you do. Need some reminding?

The demonization of darker people into “guilty until proven innocent” further renders white people into the opposite.

Of course! The media needs to feed white fears to thrive, after all.

Speaking as someone who battled suicidal thoughts for several years in my early life (culminating in three attempts), I would caution against speculation about the mental state of a person you don’t know, and why they might choose a particular method/venue.

(I’m totally fine now, no concern needed for me- my troubles were 30 years ago, but thank you in advance for those who would express as such)

It is also specifically against the community rules here. For good reason, too.

Also, HUGS for past you!

When I was fourteen, I saw a guy set himself on fire, and he died three weeks later.

So my suicidal thoughts were generally in that direction.

The guy who immolated himself was very definitely sending a message, but I do wonder why there’s a shift to killing people before the suicide (self inflicted, or killed by a cop).

it is said he cancelled his contracts with long standing customers ( he was a self employed it worker ) i wonder if no healthcare maybe though. it can be very expensive for self employed older workers.

But again, that person DID NOT BLOW UP A CITY BLOCK. This person did.

And most of them don’t take out a city block. :woman_shrugging:

But again, this is all speculation at this point, and once again, if the person had not been a white man, most speculation would be running in the opposite direction.

Even if he was just suicidal, what he did is still self-centered and deeply socially destructive. It’s not sympathetic in the least.

Yeah, but you don’t start warning people to evacuate with out the bomb being active, and you don’t sit on an active bomb you know is going to go off on accident. So… probably on purpose, but impossible to prove.

Motive still unknown, but it looks like his selection of location might have something to do with the fact that his late father worked for the company that later merged with AT&T.

absolutely. that said, understanding the reasons people become radicalized can help sometimes to address those issues.

it’s almost exclusively white men who engage in domestic terrorism. but even for “foreign extremists” i believe fully in understanding their motivations and believe we should reduce the pressures causing sectarianism, extremism, and violence.

i also know that instead of doing that our country has always doubled down on the very things spurring extremism. and that the treatment in media, and among people in general, is totally based on racial perception. so, yeah, it’s important to bring up the difference in treatment when this stuff occurs.

I agree. There is just a difference between understanding why someone becomes radicalized and giving them the benefit of the doubt before any real information comes out about motive. If this person had been a non-white person, they most likely would not get the benefit of the doubt.

I’m aware. It’s been a serious struggled to get people to understand this very basic fact and to not default to the “he must be troubled” explanation due to their whiteness. If the past four years has been convinced people that this particular form of extremism is the biggest threat we face, then we’re really screwed.

Indeed, that’s what I thought when I saw the headline. Was he unaware how short memories are for this sort of thing?
