This seems to be promising research and all but…
What the actual fuck!?! Is there a word for being so cynical you will believe humanity is capable of anything, yet still capable of being astounded at what horrors we dream up?
GMO’ed in the hope of accelerating Alzheimer’s research. The fact is, these mice or not, Alzheimer’s is a very tough nut to crack. We are not making that much progress. Pick the horror: transgenic mice or persistently untreatable brain disease. It’s horrors all the way down.
yeah but what about Chad olive oil?
Time for the periodic reminder that basic science research like this does not map to human dietary recommendations in any way. Please don’t go around telling people that eating olive oil prevents Alzheimer’s. This study is not evidence of that. Every weird diet fad comes from mainstream press wildly misreporting and hyperbolizing basic science like this that is (at best) 50 years away from meaning anything about humans.
I’ve worked as a scientist for about 8 years, and I’ve seen in person how pharmacological research on rats looks like. It’s order of magnitude less horrible than suffering inflicted on animals at industrial farms.
I will tell people this - if there’s a markedly lower incidence of Alzheimer’s in countries, and regions, and indeed specific families, that are way high in their consumption of olive oil compared to those who are not.
You’d think that would be known already, without the study, if it were a dramatic difference.
Maybe mix the olive oil in your favorite beverage, alcohol beverage that is…
It is already known from observational studies.

Relevant quote: " In the French Three-City Study, a ten-year follow-up (2000–2010) showed that higher consumption of olive oil was associated with lower risk of death, as well as protection from cognitive decline and stroke." [emphasis mine]
Did they they verify that, or just go by the label?
Okay, so I just scanned the article, but I understand that mouse brain sautéd in extra virgin olive oil will cure dementia?
Paper is behind paywall…Who funded the research? Would be surprised if not an olive oil industry affiliate.
I mean, I get it, but man, the weight on our collective soul…
We pay for everything at some point.
I recall a tv interview (back in to 90s) of an elderly woman (100+ years of age and quite bright for any age) who was asked for her “secret” to longevity: She held up what looked to be a shot glass… and it was filled with olive oil, and – according to her – consumed once per day for most of her life.
Whatever was going on with that, I’ve never been bothered by the criticism that I use too much olive oil in everything. Taste, texture, appearance… and any other bennies are appreciated.
It cured the mouse’s dementia since the process killed the mouse.
I don’t own a cat because laboratory studies have long shown that proximity to cats is one of the strongest predictors of premature death in mice.
Individual results may vary, of course. George Burns broke the century mark on a diet that consisted primarily of gin and cigars.
In other words,’’ said Benji, steering his curious little vehicle right over to Arthur, ``there’s a good chance that the structure of the question is encoded in the structure of your brain — so we want to buy it off you.’’
``What, the question?’’ said Arthur.
``Yes,’’ said Ford and Trillian.
``For lots of money,’’ said Zaphod.
`No, no,’’ said Frankie, ``it’s the brain we want to buy.’’
``What!’’
``I thought you said you could just read his brain electronically,’’ protested Ford.
`Oh yes,’’ said Frankie, ``but we’d have to get it out first. It’s got to be prepared.’’
``Treated,’’ said Benji.
``Diced.’’
Ah… but how much longer would he have lived w/o gin and cigars.
Brain Salad Surgery?
