Facebook is buying Giphy in deal valued at $400 million

Surely Apple (and others, but Apple is the most resistant of the big tech businesses to Facebook’s insidious crawl) will now find, buy or build alternative gif search engines?

If not, this seriously damages iMessage’s value proposition for me.

EDIT to be clear, the value proposition of iMessage is a private, near-universal IM platform owned by a company I trust not to sell or abuse my private data.

What’s the glitch frame in the lead gif? It moves too fast to see.

It’s just a frontal shot of the Zuck:

A They Live style reveal would have been nice. Maybe if I view it with these glasses… ?

That ends it with giphy for me, now on a search for an alternative. The gfycat UI works and looks a lot like giphy, but their selection is terrible, and plus I can’t get it to work on BB BBS. Tenor doesn’t work on here either.

I shudder to think what your IM conversations look like.

did giphy actually serve up gifs (not just video that hacked to look that way)?

You may not want to know, but Facebook does.

I think you’d find them very pedestrian.

I don’t use gifs (>40yrs old) but I can’t stop everyone I speak to from using them.

It’s a constant battle to keep my private conversations away from Facebook; I’ve lost the whatsapp war, as have most parents of a school age child; but I don’t have a Facebook or instagram account any more, and I really REALLY don’t want Facebook all up in my private messages. That’s the value proposition of iMessage - a private platform away from companies who would abuse or sell my private information. Whatever you think of Apple, they are making privacy a feature that’s worth paying for.

kind of ironic that google’s being hit with antitrust while facebook snarfs up yet another company.

hmmm… maybe facebook can acquire all the parts of google that get split off. that’ll be good for competition on the internet, right?
