Took a quick look at the FBI pages the TechDirt article links to and under the header “Protect your PC” it also fails to mention that you can encrypt your system.

Surely they do recommend the kind of encryption that protects you against evil foreign governments and criminal hackers, but not your benevolent protectors in the Three Letter Agencies 
The NSA has everything, and has had it for years, going back terabytes. It’s stored in Bluffdale, Utah, USA.
The era of takesbacksies are over, as long as the power’s on.
They don’t want to admit that the only copy of the relevant email is on someone’s locked iPhone.
