Exactamundo!
At this point, we’re at the same place the US was in the 20s with the KKK as a national organization. The modern iteration of that is more diffuse and fragmented meaning there are lots of different groups rather than a single one. But they’ve managed to find a connective tissue with Trumpism. Their goal of taking over the GOP is nearly done, with a few people trying to stop that from happening (maybe not enough, but we don’t know that yet). What’s worse is that the GOP we’re depending upon to get this done aren’t exactly actual moderates either (McConnell, Romney, Cheney, etc, are all pretty far right, with probably Mittens the most moderate of this particular group, which is scary).
They DID let this happen, though and bear responsibility for what their party is becoming. They let in the extreme elements and tried to use it to their advantage. they wanted to have their cake and eat it, too (use the populist energy of the far right to gain voters, but still control the party). And they are fucking us all over in the process. They might have destroyed the experiment in democratic governance here in the US through their desire for power.
