If you don’t want to give your money to the evil corporations that own the streaming rights to everything there’s always the old-school route:
Until the last season, anyway.
No shame here, what ever twixt your nether regions is fine by me. I was merely giving an accurate description of the character (and the fact that we were supposed to treat him as one of the firefly fam yet had never met him. Cousin Oliver of the 'verse if you ask me)
Hey, the first major character to die in Star Trek: The Next Generation was into robot sex too and nobody shamed her for it at her funeral.
I think I’m savvy enough to see it without having to own it or pay for it.
At some point, anyway; judging from some of the other responses you got, it does not seem to be all that well regarded amongst the fandom.
Man, fans are entitled. If it happens, it’s new Firefly, which we’ve been wanting for fifteen years! If it’s good, excellent! If it’s not exactly what we would want, it will still probably be watchable. If it’s bad, we can ignore it!
From Star Wars to Indiana Jones, why do we keep acting like additions to our favorite stories are going to ruin what came before?
Because they do. They’re not additions. They’re rewriting. They’re retconning. They’re a watering down of rich universes that have frayed edges for fans to explore for themselves rather than ever widening corporate definitions. They’re rehashing of characters and story so new generations get shredded hand-me-downs rather than new worlds.
Don’t take the word of those Eeyores on it. If you loved the series, you will like the movie, at least. It’s well-paced and adds a delightfully scary new villain. I loved it. Then again, I can hold the thoughts in my head that good stories aren’t made with immortal, indestructible characters and still be sad at their loss. I know you can also do that, so I’m confident you’ll like Serenity.
they’re gonna fuck it up
If you think sci-fi fans are bad about that kind of thing wait until you find out how most Christians reacted when Joseph Smith wrote a sequel to the Bible.
I think this is an edge case where the core premise had been premade to sustain resurrection. That isn’t the case with Firefly or most other premises.
I can’t imagine Disney endorsing kicking a bad guy into a running engine. If they can’t do that, it ain’t Firefly. It’s a cheap imitation no matter what they spend on it.
They’ve been trying to catch that lightning in a bottle again ever since.
I thought they did a pretty good job with The Expanse too, but then they cancelled it and Amazon picked it up.

Hmmm Doctor Jones did similar and the theme park seems to like the Indiana Jones ride well enough and Lucasfilm wants to do Indy 5.
If you loved the serie
I did.
Just not enough to pay to watch the film.
When quarantine is over the public library is an option.
Mal shot first.
I can’t imagine Disney endorsing kicking a bad guy into a running engine.
The Mandalorian straight up murdered like a dozen Jawas because they had dismantled his ride and Han Solo threw that one guy straight into the mouth of a Rathtar, so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility.
I’m firmly in camp worth-a-watch. Whenever I circle around to re-watch the show I always cap it off with serenity. It’s basically season 2 with the side plots trimmed out and a better budget. Not perfect but unless Disney pulls another Mandalorian out of a hat it’s all we got.
