The range jumps in the song are a workout even for well trained singers, so we’re pretty used to the song being a lifeless vocal tuneup. Whitney gives zero fucks about a mere two octave jump so she’s actually performing the song, reading some personality into the lines. Different class of thing. The full orchestra backing doesn’t hurt; there’s a bunch of arrangements, some are dull.
I was reading this and asked my wife if she wanted to hear someone butcher the National Anthem. Sure.
Then I played it and it wasn’t bad.
Sure, Whitney is the gold standard but here’s a classic rocker that does an awesome job.
