It gets less hard to imagine when you consider that WWII was probably when the largest amount of ordnance was manufactured in a short amount of time and put into the hands of the largest number of people.

The Army by itself during the war had 8.7 million enlistees. Compared to 476,000 today.

Anyplace people have been, you can find all kinds of stuff. Bet the previous owner brought it home as a souvenir, decided he didn’t want it around the house anymore (when the grandkids stopped by), and chucked it in the convenient lake on the last fishing trip.

Yeah. There is a similar problem in Laos/Cambodia. I was in Siem Reap about 10 years ago and there was an article in the paper saying that this was the first month that they had not had a landmine victim. You could be cultivating a field for years and then just once put your plow a few inches away from its normal travel.
