That’s… actually gorgeous! I love all that dark wood.

The buried lede is that this is the owner’s second home on the island…their party house.

Mercer Island sits in the middle of Lake Washington, between Seattle and Bellevue and is some mega-pricey real estate.
Interstate 90 runs through it in the north end.
That said, I would sooo love a house made from an old ship! this one is really lovely!
edit: went to the actual article and of course they already said exactly where MI is located, duh. the photos of the interior are pretty damn cool, tho!

Yeah, it’s $2 million!

Still lovely, tho! Just not $2 million lovely!

Exactly - it’s gorgeous, but for 2 million, I want some separation from the other houses. There are 2 houses right on top of it and another one visible at all times next door across the lawn. I wouldn’t even vacation there, let alone live there.

Unfortunately, homes like these are considerable commitments. I’m not talking upkeep, but the obvious requirement that the homeowner always stays in character as a sea captain.

The highway through the island, interstate 90, is also capped and the covering is a park maintained by the city. I believe it is the most expensive to maintain highway in the USA, or at least it was at one point in the recent past.

More common than I’d have thought:

There’s a cool little house like that in Michigan which isn’t from a ship, but it’s built to look like one.

Meh, the I parked a boat on land, without even burying it seems kinda lazy to me. But I really like the last one - the sheds made out of the hull. Cut a ship in half horizontally. Build a house out of the top, like the US Navy boat from article we’re replying to, and then use the hull as a tool-or-person-shed. That’s pretty neat.

Interestingly, if you google map Mercer Island the first photo that comes up in the sidebar is this very same house, it sits right at the shore, which makes sense.

Well, by American standards of the last couple of decades perhaps. But it’s still larger than most of the places I’ve lived in other than my current place.

My house is worth about $200K. The land is worth about $750K. That’s just how these things work out. I sold a place in a city to move here and just about broke even, and I have a much better view and much less smog.

If you’re looking to have some privacy, then don’t live by the water. It takes a difference sort of person. These are often close communities as every storm or flood forces people to depend on one another, and that usually ends up extending into other aspects of daily life.

You know you’re in a good place when your neighbor asks you if she should pick up anything at the farmer’s market for you in the morning. And maybe you can help her install earthquake straps on her bookshelves.

I don’t live by the water, the ocean is a 12 minute drive for me, I can’t even see it from here. But my community is pretty close (in spirit) and we keep in touch on wild fires, frequent power outages, well problems, rock slides, road closures, rodent solutions, etc.
