Regarding the faults- the Catholic Church may not exactly be leading the charge when it comes to acceptance and equality for all, but there’s some good news today regarding progress on marriage equality. Pope Francis is definitely the least-bad of the popes we’ve had in a long time, if not all time.

Good for him. I’d prefer he support LGBQT+ Catholics who’d like their marriages to be accepted alongside hetero marriages (and remarriages), but this is certainly a starting point.

I just heard some very good commentary on this announcement that the effect of the pope supporting same sex unions on gay Catholics in Canada, the US or Europe might be next to none, but it might have more of an effect in countries where the church has influence and being gay is currently illegal. If any of them can be pressured into saying “We’re still not doing same-sex unions, but we’ll split the difference and stop putting people in prison or executing them” then that would be the big win.
