The Catholic Church (think: Pope and Vatican, not USian fundies) doesn’t believe that. See: Nostra Aetate
I think you’ve hit on the secret there. Every mass shooting resets the clock, see? Now of course you’ve got diminishing returns, after Columbine we weren’t able to talk for a good few years after all, but good old american knowhow keeps us ahead of the curve since, if I recall correctly, we’re pulling off more than a mass shooting per day.
Fair enough, but isn’t Second Vatican the reforms that almost split the modern Church?
Most 'Murican evangelicals I’ve ever met definitely do believe it, and it’s central to their faith.
As to the two sitting next to her…I wouldn’t want to be sitting across from them at a poker game. Nary a flinch.
Unfortunately, they are really fucking close to a huge power grab. Think Abrahamic Law for all of us.
I’m guessing the catchy liturgical tunes have something to do with that.
Honestly what other conclusion do you expect from a person whose ability to exercise rational thought has been systematically undermined by religion?
Oh yeah, I really wonder how many converts Tom Lehrer alone was responsible for.
Closer to God indeed.
Scientifically speaking the best place to be shot is in the calf. You are less likely to die from blood loss as you can elevate your leg. Less likely to damage an organ or delicate skeleton system, unlike getting hit in the shoulder or even the foot. I’d also accept being shot in the ear lobe as a valid answer, despite the disfigurement the recover time would be very short.
Now word play aside, the best locale to be shot is in the waiting room of the emergency room. Lots of doctors around and you might already be checked in and won’t have to waste time digging up your insurance card.
Not getting shot at all is preferable of course. And theoretically we have the choice open to us, if we start addressing the laws of our nation and the cultural of our society.
How about we just stop killing each other so we don’t have to have a best place to be shot. Why is that so hard?
Music. Décor. Pomp. Incense. Entertainment value, for sure.
I’ve never understood where “Christians” get this idea that when you die you straight to “Heaven”.
What do they think all that babble about the “Last Judgement” when their demigod returns to judge “the living and the dead” in one massive, presumably all-day, session is about?
Uh - feeling closer in church due to the experience doesn’t preclude feeling closer to him elsewhere.
If that’s the case then her statement wouldn’t mean anything. She would have said, “in church, or somewhere else where I feel closer to Christ,” but she didn’t say that.
What an insensitive thing to say.
It’s also very possible those who survived their loved ones after this tradgedy will feel differently about this church forever. The suggestion that dying at a church is some sort of silver lining is just beyond the pale.
Or lots of bits, some of which are more credibly from the person quoted as Jesus than lots of the other bits, which would be decried as socialism by the Foxies/fundies… I don’t know about socialist, but I’m pretty sure he really fucking hated the rich.
Most genuinely religious people I’ve met consider US Fundies to be sort of evil.
I’ve often thought that during funerals, they’re about the only time I’m in a church (and fortunately fewer funerals have religious bits now than when I was younger. Even the olds don’t do that shit), the platitudes of the religious person/priest “and Jebediah is in a better place” are completely contradicted by the bits talking about bodily resurrection on the last day. But then, holding contradictory stories to be true is a big part of religion - like the way the four gospels are incompatible but we (who were brought up as christian) typically have a confused mash of them in our heads.
If one says, “I am happy at Disney World.” It doesn’t mean they aren’t happy other places. Even if one is happiest at Disney World, it doesn’t mean they aren’t happy elsewhere.
Especially if you have a pet calf.
You’re fortunate not to live among them. I wouldn’t say they’re all evil, but they practice evil in worshiping eternal mass torture. And as this video from the network that panders to them demonstrates, their cognitive dissonances can have truly ugly real-world impact.
I would think, regardless of one’s faith, the best place to be shot would be a hospital. But what do I know?
