Fuck Elon Musk (Part 1)

Ron (or his dad) is most likely the second or third QAnon.

Iā€™m not surprised they banned Sora for that. Twitter is no longer safe for trans people (not that it ever really was). Thatā€™s why I bailed last month, despite that being my social media home since not long after I came out. My mental health has improved dramatically, too.

Lastly, long-form Tweets are expected to arrive sometime in early February. The rollout of the feature would allow users to type up to 4,000 characters per Tweet, up from 280 currently.

I expect Johnny Silverhand will show up more.

I go there to read posts from a couple of accounts, but thatā€™s pretty much it.

Yeah. I miss some of my mutuals, but my brain always got sucked in and next thing I knew I was doomscrolling and reading comments on mainstream media posts about trans people. Iā€™m much better off with reduced social media activity.

This! Iā€™m curious how much of it do you think is Twitter specific versus how much of it is reduction of exposure to social media in general

Definitely a lot to do with Twitter. Iā€™m still active on other media, and have added Mastodon and Tumblr since quitting Twitter. I think a lot of it has to do with their algorithm. I tried to curate my feed fairly heavily, but in the last few months I donā€™t remember many times I wouldnā€™t see something transphobic near the top of the timeline.

Perhaps it has something to do with the culture there too - a lot of people seem to be on Twitter to argue and fight, so of course anything even mildly controversial would get more engagement and be pushed by the algorithm.

How will they know?

They donā€™t have people for accessibility or multi-lingual testing, for a start.

This first tweak seems like an app change, so do they have a QA department capable of doing full regression testing for Android/iOS, across many device formats, through supported OS versions?

The 4K tweet change, assuming it wasnā€™t added a while ago, is going to go right through the back-end, storage, caching, data transfers, ev-ree-thing! And itā€™s going to be a live change, where they flip the whole system over, and if not all at once, the old parts better not barf on the new data.

Nobody hot patches a rocket in flight. Hopefully Tesla doesnā€™t do it with cars. Elon and his goblins are in for a fun ride.

In keeping with zero-based budgeting, every new tweet after February will overwrite 14 old tweets. If you pay 8 bucks, youā€™ll get to overwrite other peopleā€™s tweets and others donā€™t get to overwrite yours.

Oh, I more meant in the abstract. Even when a company releases a new UI that is stable, it has to be really good for users not to resent the disruption. Musk got rid of the resources to imagine either might be the case, and definitely the good will to give it a chance. Heā€™s doing it because he thinks heā€™s smart and he isnā€™t.

Just what it always needed, the ability to buy fake trophies with real money.

(Jane Manchun Wong has a Mastodon account, but this wasnā€™t on there.)

The Twitter Crop is back.

@popcrave: Twitter has brought back cropped image previews after introducing the full-frame update in May 2021. Screenshots show before and after.

The comments are really sinking in the cesspool.

But perhaps more serious is the issue of child sexual abuse material. There has been this weird narrative making the rounds that Twitter, under the previous regime, did not take the issue seriously. And that since Elon took over, it has done much more to stop CSAM. Both parts of this narrative appear to be false.
ā€¦
Weā€™ve also heard some other disturbing claims from inside Twitter, including that Twitter has cut back, significantly, on the support that its trust & safety staff get, such as important and necessary counseling support for frontline workers who deal with these issues. This is, of course, always the awful tradeoff with these kinds of roles and jobs. You need some people in the process, but itā€™s a terrible job which can create real post-traumatic stress for those employees.

The same article notes that the automated takedowns are actually causing other problems, like suppressing victims speaking out about what happened to them:

I guess weā€™ll find out. A search returned mostly people complaining about attempts to upload fanart. It might be gradual; I remember mobile clients first got the change away from the crop.
