Today, Japan recorded 18,889 new cases of COVID-19, beating the previous record (yesterday) by a little over 3,000, with 20 prefectures reporting new daily records. But that’s not the bad news.
The bad news is the severe rains and flooding across most of Western Japan, hitting Kyushu especially hard. Virtually everyone in Nagasaki (over 400,000 people) were told to evacuate their homes, and over a million people in six prefectures in Kyushu. And the rain is expected to be worse over the next 24 hours than it was today. There are many areas expecting well over 300ml of rain over the next 24 hours.
Online policies by the organization say that outdoor practices are not to be held if a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) reading exceeds 92. The WBGT differs from the heat index because it takes into account temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover.
A very good policy
The heat index that day for the Jonesboro area, where the school is located, was between 101 to 106 degrees, according to the lawsuit. Jonesboro is about 20 miles south of downtown Atlanta.
But useless if you are not bothering to follow it. Idiocy kills, and always has. The best policies are only as good as the people who fail to follow them.

UNHCR Afghan refugees reach Iran as violence escalates
09 August 2021
…
With almost one million Afghan refugee cardholders already in country, the Government of Iran has consistently welcomed Afghans fleeing protracted conflict and violence for over 40 years, including through exemplary inclusion of Afghans in national health and education systems. UNHCR appeals to the government to continue this tradition of hospitality and lifesaving protection.
Yeah… not a good look for Our Team… and I certainly include in this one, we were there as well.
… Among the more than 200-person group were U.S.-allied Afghan interpreters — applicants for the State Department’s Special Immigrant Visa program — and their family members …
I’ve spent all day dragging my aching body from the bed to the couch and back again. Yet, I’m not sure this is the right thread for me because the reason for my utter exhaustion, headaches and muscle pain is that I finally got my second vaccine yesterday!
It’s two or three weeks before I would have otherwise gotten it because I was on a short notice call list if they had any left over at the end of the day. Which means I had to speed across town yesterday when they called me at work.
This time it is Moderna, last time it was BioNTech/Pfizer. Everyone I know who had that mix was knocked out for two days afterwards. But it’s so worth it, of course!
Set out to complete a 24-hour, 120 mile race. Months of training. 25 miles in my heart wouldn’t stop racing. Despite 30 mins of rest and electrolytes and fluids, it was still at 120+bpm. I had to withdraw. Fuck that.
I’m not the poster in question, but my cousins run ultra-marathons like this, so my guess is that it’s a 120 mile race that one is expected to finish in under 24 hours.
Which doesn’t seem possible (5 mph?!) but there you go.
