Fuck Today (Part 1)

I’m an ultra marathoner and a 24 hour cutoff for a 120 mile race would be very unusual. There is a race in Tennessee famous for brutal cutoffs, but it wasn’t today. Curious, so I asked.

It’s adventure racing. So, it’s a race you’re expected to finish in 24 hours. This one was a 1 mile run, 7 miles on the river, 1 mile run, 30 mile off-road technical terrain bike, 12 miles hike/run, 26 miles off-road hill climb bike, 13 mile paddle, 12 mile trek, 8 mile bike. 9 am start Saturday, 9 am Sunday finish. Winners will likely take 18 hours. There are checkpoints along the way, and you have a map and compass to help you navigate. You have to find the checkpoints using the map and compass. No gps.

I’ve done others at 4, 8, and 10 hours. There one coming up in February that’s 72 hours.

Sounds tough. If you never DNF though, you’re not really racing as hard as you could. Also with those conditions you could put a lot more than 25 miles into the 25 mile checkpoint.

A mix of orienteering and mini-iron man? That sounds like fun, at least back when I operated a pedicab and could handle that kind of effort.

Yeah, that’s a minimum distance. It can be a bit more if you thrash around looking for the checkpoints, which are usually off-trail by a bit of distance.

Pretty much that, yes. For various definitions of “fun.”

95 and any humidity at all is a very dangerous setting to exert yourself in. Did you see the report of the basketball player who died in those kind of conditions? I would say you dodged a bullet, almost literally.

That kind of reminds me of randonneuring in the cycling world. The Paris-Brest-Paris and Boston-Montréal-Boston events are the biggest events for that. When I was younger and reeling off centuries, I considered getting into that scene.

The longest race I ever trained and registered for, I did one step “worse”, DNS. A2A, an 87 mile road skate from Athens to Atlanta. That one still stings.

Was it down the Atlanta HWY or 316?

The US is just fine with immigrants as long as they do our dirty work and keep us stocked in food, but not much further than that.

Dunno; DNS stands for Did Not Start, which is why it stings more than DNF. My philosophy is that even the person who finished the race dead last still did better than 7 billion other people.

Thanks for the earworm.

I kinda like that song. Love it or hate it though, Croce’s mustache is absolutely nonpareil.

Indubitably.

Or wait… maybe.
