 Of course it was Rick Scott. Any minute now, someone will find clips of GOP members calling Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid socialism. Can’t wait to see the outraged seniors, followed by the usual “clarification” about the liberals who are his real target.

So they’re pretty much telling anyone with an ounce of sense and compassion to stay away from Florida? If you insist!

For society to exist, there has to be some form of social interaction and sharing of power between individuals, groups of individuals, political groups, the people and their government, etc. In very simplistic terms, the existence of human society depends upon some degree of socialism (government by tyranny, democracy, even republicanism, monarchy, etc.)
Otherwise, there is anarchy. Perhaps this is the modern American Republican Dream.

They seriously think that capitalism is socialism now. Private property is only meant to be owned by reactionary cis-het white men, just like God intended.

Right, Florida is one of the biggest beneficiaries of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. I guess you don’t have to worry about socialists travelling to Florida since they’re already living there in the first place.

Throw in Disability benefits too.

That’s why they are so keen on owning guns.

As a social anarchist, I’m going to have to disagree with your definitions of socialism and anarchy.

For far too long we have let our enemies define who we are. I have to define myself as they have no place for me. I fight for a world they can not imagine.

In the GOP authoritarian dream, only members of their inner circle will have power. They could decide the terms of everyone else’s interactions (or existence). Once they are in control, members of their party who were temporarily tolerated for their votes and campaign contributions will find out very quickly what it’s like to be marginalized and oppressed.

No, they want fascism. Very different political philosophy.

Er… what @PsiPhiGrrrl said! And what @the_borderer said!

Noted, on both counts. I’ll definitely be staying the hell away from Florida until further notice.

There are, I think, four freedoms we can glean from the Republican program.

There is the freedom to control — to restrict the bodily autonomy of women and repress the existence of anyone who does not conform to traditional gender roles.

There is the freedom to exploit — to allow the owners of business and capital to weaken labor and take advantage of workers as they see fit.

There is the freedom to censor — to suppress ideas that challenge and threaten the ideologies of the ruling class.

And there is the freedom to menace — to carry weapons wherever you please, to brandish them in public, to turn the right of self-defense into a right to threaten other people.

Roosevelt’s four freedoms were the building blocks of a humane society — a social democratic aspiration for egalitarians then and now. These Republican freedoms are also building blocks not of a humane society but of a rigid and hierarchical one, in which you can either dominate or be dominated.

hell, at this point I don’t want to travel to (mainland) florida. it is getting crazier by the day.

in all seriousness and to the topic, i have some friends back in Phoenix who are gay that i stay in touch with. they absolutely love Disney. in a series of recent text messages, one said they wanted to plan a trip to WDW and asked me how far away i was and could they visit. i strongly advised them not to come to florida at all, it isn’t safe.
come to Key West, still open, LBGTQ+ friendly and diverse. be sure to fly in/out. don’t drive down through the mainland.

C’mon now, be fair… this isn’t an either/or thing, there’s also feudalism, serfdom & slavery.

Now we’re talkin’!

If you are trans though (and especially if you are a trans person of color), I would definitely advise not to travel to Florida.

No doubt Texas is looking at Florida with livid envy, desperate for those dangerous-looking stripes.

In all seriousness, I wonder how far down the fascist path Florida can go. They don’t seem to be stopping and they don’t seem to be trying to hide it. It feels like they’re seceding without bothering to actually secede.
