Gendered objectification

I have the most awesome gif from that vid… but of course I cannot post it until I get home.

Love the video! It’s such a classic makeup look too.

I like how they start off all men, and then gradually add more and more women to the mix. Sums up a lot of this thread in one music video.

Agreed! I love watching the men dance! At some point you can’t really tell which gender is which.

Hahah i knew ladies that only dated goths for years and then dated a more mainstream dude to be horrified to learn that normal dudes do not do body hair removal like goth bois do. LOL

“What do you mean youre not going to shave your arm pitts?”

And theres nothing finer than a man in eyeliner.

Yaaah, body hair removal has always been difficult for me. There really isn’t a place to draw the line, because there would always be a line.

I did have a hairdresser in Austin who got a lot of enjoyment out of waxing the back of my neck. Especially the ripping part. The closest I’ve ever been to experiencing BDSM - and by that, I mean her pleasure.

I get the controversy around abortion, and to a limited extent, birth control, but what the hell’s wrong with free tampons?

Firstly, it’s just something else that differentiates women’s biological bodies from men’s. But also, do you realize how expensive tampons are? They aren’t cheap, and yes, there is a definite difference in comfort between the cheaper and more expensive version. Tampons, and other similar feminine hygiene products, are big business. Off the top of my head, other than getting into the funereal arts, I can’t think of a more stable business to be in. If we made them free, that’s socialism right there.

Lastly, this little nugget drives the point home further: https://www.themarysue.com/babies-over-booze/ (Diapers and tampons are taxable items in most states.)

I used to work at a resturaunt near the ski resorts in my state. It is meant to have the ambiance of a provincial French estate.

At the time, the hostess/captains/waitstaff and bar were all female, and each wore custom tailored uniforms that looked something like this:

If you would have asked me if I was self objectifying at the time, I would have called you crazy, not only was the concept unkown to me, but I was trying way too hard to be a “cool girl” then. Even when things that the owners, customers, or other staff did made me uncomfortable, or were plain sexual harrassment, I would never, ever, have complained. In social situations it was the same, even when I had to sit through a “Girls gone wild video”. I just didn’t want to risk being a “bitch”, and after all, the tips were great.

Now I can look back and see that I was clearly self-objectifying, and not just at work. I think that you are right in that judgements about another person’s motivations or choices are not helpful. But I do wish I had learned what I know now earlier on. It would have saved me a lot of heartache, maltreatment at the hands of others, and risky behaviors.

Edited to add : This isn’t to say that I think self objectification is always a negative thing. But in my situation it was certainly not empowering.

Every time some male politician talks about taxes on tampons I want to hold a “bleed-in”

Luxury eh? Ok lemme sit on your couch. See how necessary these products are real quick!

There is apparently a vocal minority of men who actually think we can “hold it”, and therefore we’re just trying to get free stuff for … idk, fun? Obviously logic isn’t in play here.

Edit: that reminds me I noticed last week that the staff bathrooms at the museum have those $.25 tampon dispensers. They’re in an area not accessible to the public, why do we not have just baskets of free supplies?

I know it’s a nonprofit but we’re also owned by a dude who owns multiple sports teams. I think he could spring for some tampax.

For real? There are men who actually believe this? Why am I shocked.

Never doubt the existence of willful ignorance.

But back to male objectification, I haven’t posted nearly enough Man-Jello…

Being completely honest. Joe Manganiello’s werewolf character was the only reason I kept watching True Blood, even after it became obvious that Alan Ball was pulling the terrible plots out of someone’s ass.

It was bad enough they killed off this cool drink of water in S2:

Those two look a little to solid to be jello… unless you mean the way it makes you feel and well they are some pretty hot guys.

Maybe they think someone will take the whole haul…like that one kid on Halloween.

Objectification is acceptable for men, because there is no risk, on a physical level and also on a societal level.

(I would also argue in terms of hormones / sex drive there is also less risk, just based on the data. How many women have visited prostitutes versus men, how many sex crimes for men vs women, etc.)

Same logic behind “punching up” vs. “punching down”. It is asymmetric but that’s OK because those in power, have power to fall back on.

They’re unisex bathrooms, maybe they’re worried about weirding out the men that work there. But I mean, there’s still the wall dispensers.

If anyone steals a whole box of tampons, they’re probably pretty desperate. That shit’s expensive, and you can go through a LOT of supplies.
