I guess not really ALL terrain then.
Clue one:
The Jeep looks like it could drive off just fine. Does it have a winch?
You guys just don’t get it.
It’s a Jeep thing…
Fucking yikes! That could have been much worse!
…in GTA.
In the lamentable surveillance society in which we live, I’m disappointed there’s no video.
(OK, I know what you’re thinking and it’s a fair point but a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds!)
No need. Shiny side is still up…ish.
Not definitive. Somebody could have seen the sticker and righted it!
I’ve forgotten my physics. Can anyone estimate how fast a jeep is going when it hits the ground after a (let’s say) 22m drop?
I’ll start you off: first assume it’s a frictionless sphere
Obviously, the safety features are not optimized for underside collisions, but there would be some impact absorption from tires blowing, shocks, struts, wheels snapping off, seat frame & cushion crumpling, and what not. Though, from the one still photo, it looks like the rear took the impact (probably front against the building, which absorbed energy, then back to ground).
Bonus points for showing your work.
Here ya go: distance S(t) = a*t^2/2 (starting at zero velocity)
velocity V(t) = a*t
a = 9.8 m/s^2
The rest is left as a homework assignment. Yes, it will be on the mid-term.
Oh…you think it had no forward motion to begin with? I’m gonna guess it was not moving slowly, so just add X into your equation.
I forgot my son is smarter than me, now. Though probably not smarter than you.
Here’s his work.
v(final)^2 = v(initial)^2 + 2ad
v(final)^2 = 0 + 2(9.81)(22)
[and convert to americanese]
final speed = 31 mph
It took me so long to type my reply to myself, you beat me to it.
Forward speed doesn’t affect speed impacting the ground though, right?
Tell that to the missile makers. You are trying to measure the speed an otherwise motionless item is moving when it hits from that height.
Was the driver filming porn when this happened? I understand it’s the thing to do in odd places in Santa Monica.
You’ve surpassed my level of understanding.
I thought when solving a simplified “ideal world” Physics I problem of dropping something from a height and determining velocity of impact at the ground, one could disregard forward velocity (as it’s 90deg to the acceleration of gravity).
Not sure if you’re solving a more complex problem then me or if I’m even wrong about the simple stuff
Luckily, it’s not my day job.
