I have strongly suspected it is the go-to excuse for those with antisocial personality disorder for the last decade at least. They aren’t going to care that they are making life harder for people with autism, are they?

Yikes. Let’s not so thoroughly mangle our definitions that teasing the white, male, pro-fascist aggressor is now “punching down.”

You can argue about whether teasing, and gloating about the teasing, is the right thing to do in this situation, but it’s not “punching down.”

I’m not sure how autism and/or spectrum disorders are either a terribly good fit or a particularly viable excuse for dabbling in fascism.

They do say some interesting things about the effect of relatively weak theory of mind on common moral reasoning tests(though they also say some interesting things about the difficulty of writing tests that reasonably high functioning people who are aware that they are missing out on something don’t answer correctly by application of heuristics rather than intuition); apparently it skews moral judgement toward consideration of outcomes rather than intentions to a greater degree than is common.

In general, though, there are only modest differences(some often compensated for consciously when the subject thinks about the problem) and no deficiencies in moral reasoning that are even close to the overall magnitude or extreme peculiarity that would be exculpatory by reason of incapacity; and the differences that there are seem like a…particularly foolish choice for the would-be fascist.

Joyous immersion in the massed strength of the whole and the will of its leader is basically empathy for assholes; so if you find empathy(as opposed to a sort of analytic sympathy) difficult you’ll probably need something stronger than a tiki torch for it to really work.

Surrounding yourself with people who practice, even valorize, cruel exercise of power by the strong over the weak for its own sake(when not for entertainment) should be readily identifiable as an egregiously terrible plan to anyone who has long experience with having a target on their back in social situations for reasons they don’t really grasp but don’t need a statistician to tell them are likely to be just as present in future scenarios as they have been up to now. Only blinkered optimism or impressive density would convince you that there will be enough external targets to keep your new pals busy for long.

Indeed, I suspect that only a cynical willingness to at least give “Antifa thugs brutally mock the disabled” a try is keeping is erstwhile comrades from turning on such a soft, juicy, awkward, target(and probably not for long).

Which is why I can’t understand why anyone who’s Jewish or gay or any kind of other would get involved with the alt-right. They may feel that they’re part of the team, but once that beast is unleashed it will inevitably work itself around to antisemitism and homophobia.

Those rate a sad chuckle, but those ones who are actively stoking the flames, like using Smaug to cook their breakfast, are scary crazy. What do they think will happen after they’ve raised a hate mob against the Muslim Other?
