My kids a HYPED.
There is nothing quite like the passions of an 8 and a 7 year old.
I can see why they dumped a kid into the plot, Lucas-style. As an adult, though, my response to this trailer is:
I mean, have some fun with this silliness. But nope.
I dunno. The fact that they’re using up tempo hip-hop as hype music for it makes it less serious to me.
Isn’t this a time for us all to come together, and not destroy a city over petty differences?
Possibly the wrong thread, who knows.
It’s what it is: a big-budget kid’s monster movie. That’s fine. 9-year-old me would have eaten it up. Adult me just sees it as evergreen IP + Michael Bay + post-1994 Lucas + whatever cynical studio executive greenlit and packaged “Battleship”.
I don’t have kids, but doing some simple math, I am now, let’s see, about 6.571 7 year olds combined, and EVERY DAMN ONE of them is HYYYYPED.
My poor wife.
So, they (re-) made a movie that has giant (CGI) monsters battle in and mostly destroy a (CGI) city with deafening screams and (CGI) explosions while playing a too-loud soundtrack… And about the only thing the few humans in this movie will do is scream and run (and possibly die).
Considering the world as it is today, I imagine I could have found a better way to spend those $180 million.
I wonder if they’ll finally give the people what they want and do a rom-com version this time.
I love kaiju movies, and I don’t ask much of them. But I do wish trailers would show less of the movies they are advertising. The trend for years now has been to basically show a two- or three- minute version of the movie. It doesn’t pique my interest, it makes me wish I had never seen the trailer.
I first wondered if it was kind of a nod to the Mothra pixies.
Even the worst Godzilla movie (such as the 1998 one) is better than the Planet Godzilla anime that came out 2 years ago.
i actually like the kid angle – it’s much better than the original “big ape falls for beautiful woman” thing. having a kid who can connect with an animal, no matter their relative size, makes it all about empathy, not sexual, which is an improvement to me.

The big twist will be when they both discover that their mother’s name is Mothra.
You win the topic!
I’ll be watching with my kids
The 35th one too many
I thought Godzilla was much larger than King Kong.
