Good (Encouraging) Stuff (Part 1)

I wonder why there are so many? Like, it cannot be random racism. Usually places like that are named after people who clustered in a spot. Did Native American women live in these places? Did the hills have womanly features, whatever that might mean?

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking of. So, I don’t know if some guy felt that the Valley had physical attributes, but “Squaw” placenames-thing is weird for a lot of reasons.

Indeed. Arizona alone has 20 peaks with “Squaw” in the name.

Including Sand Tank Peak - 4,020' Arizona

( to be fair, Cali also hosts one: CA Name Search among its 19 Squaw-named peaks.
Oregon has 19 peaks w “Squaw” in he name, Utah 17, etc. It’s clearly not weird to a lot of people.

Changing a mountain’s name is not an easy process. Here in CO, it has happened, for example, to commemorate the late, great Mary Cronin, but the USGS does not sway with trends and the process is uphill from the start,

  • Muñiz : I thought maybe you just stopped to catch your breath.

Chief O’Brien : Me, out of breath? I was climbing mountains in Ireland before you were born.

Muñiz : You mean hills, don’t you? They’ve gently sloping hills in Ireland - no mountains. But what do I know? After all, you’re the mountain man - an old mountain man.

Chief O’Brien : You know something, Muñiz? You’re due for a transfer. How does waste extraction sound?
