Good (Encouraging) Stuff (Part 1)

Of course it won’t be perfect like the original but I do hope it’s good.

And yet eating pigs – an “animal” that can be just as smart, trainable, affectionate and so on as dogs – continues to be just fine.

To be honest, I don’t see a problem with any of it. Personally, I wouldn’t eat dog (or cat) but if we’re going to slaughter animals to eat and not recognize degrees of intelligence, then artificial boundaries like “but these are pets!” is silly. As you point out, there’s nothing inherent to a dog that makes it any better or worse to eat than a pig or horse, or any other non-endangered animal. Either tuck in, or get out of the meat business altogether.

I don’t know that all breeds are interchangeable like that. My son’s pet rabbits would definitely not be good for meat, for example. Similarly my laying chickens aren’t very meaty. But I don’t know much about captive rabbits, so I can’t say.

Well… we expect our cats to work.

I believe the policy on mice is pretty clear to them, and we expect at least a little turf enforcement against squirrels. The little black cat thinks skunks are her friends, though, but skunks are also free grub elimination and turf aeration, so that’s no real worry.

That said, it may be time to get ourselves another 22lb, barn-raised enforcer to keep the raccoons away… The replacement cat turned out to be… overly domestic and mostly ornamental.

I was going to ask “and how’s that working out for you?” But you answered me as I expected. At one point I may have expected cats to work until they disabused me of that notion.

Not that there isn’t some overlap with what they consider to be play mind…

My grandfather raised rabbits in his backyard in Queens. They weren’t pets.

Hasenpfeffer - wait - he was the Irish grandparent.

I still have mixed feelings about Michael Moore’s attention to that woman.

She would’ve been a great performance artist, if her “act” weren’t so sincere, and grimly desperate.

My grandfather on my mother’s side raised rabbits in his backyard in Leipzig. Tasty.

(I know a couple of kids - well, young adults by now - who still think they’re eating chicken when visiting their grandma in the country. “Spreewald-Huhn”, my ass.)

Not a lot of options when you’re down and out…

Incidentally, I see that sign in my mind’s eye every time I click on the “Post your Pet or animal Pics” thread. Every. Time.

Stupid human tricks, eh?

Brains are weird.

Just think about it - the brain named itself the brain.
