Former Premier Dalton McGuinty, on stage a few years back with former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, said he was grateful to be there with the most powerful politician in Canada: Hazel McCallion… I think it wasn’t just her age that led to her retirement: when her share of the popular vote slipped, from 91% to 94% in 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006, to a mere 75% in 2010, well, the writing was on the wall. At age 101 she’s just accepted an offer to extend her directorship at our largest airport.

There were a lot of grumpy birders on Twitter the other day talking about how tenuous the evidence of their return seems to be. From what I was reading, despite the claims, there is no solid photographic evidence, just lots of blurry photos and wishful thinking. I hope it’s true, though. I love stories like this.
Same. I saw a pileated woodpecker for the first time recently (fleetingly, because they’re very shy around here) and was just blown away. I can only imagine how impressive the ivory-billed was/is and love the possibility of the “Lord God bird” still hanging in there, somewhere.
