Good (Encouraging) Stuff (Part 1)

Sure, it’s easy enough to say they aren’t Christian.

The book “The Myth of a Christian Nation” has a better theological take on this. It goes so far as to point out that if the US were truly a Christian Nation, we’d not have joined in WW2, because “turning the other cheek” is the Christian thing to do.

If you go solar or have an electric car you can go right into this contraption for power.

We asked a Siemens spokesperson about the cost of the new plug-in adapter, and he said that the company is still finalizing pricing, but “it will be a fraction of the cost of a service panel upgrade or other modifications often needed to make for a charger. Additionally, in some cases, the cost may be fully borne by utility programs.”

(Looks like there’s buried language in the legislation that calls for more fossil fuel infrastructure and carbon capture / storage.)

The best profs (including MacMillan) are the ones who care at least as much about other people as they do their profession. A professor emeritus at our uni – Donald Othmer — bequeathed more than half his $750M estate to us in 1995. Othmer and his wife Mildred had many charities… including Planned Parenthood. :slightly_smiling_face:

The value of the Othmers’ estate was not generally known until Donald’s death. It was generally known that he and Mildred did not lead an extravagant lifestyle, and they did not lavish themselves with the trappings of wealth. Now, I did meet Prof. Othmer only once, and that to drop off a paper. His office was very small, and not much larger than a proper walk-in closet (no adjoining area or room for a secretary), but not “institutional” in appearance as other offices I’d been in. Othmer’s office walls and ceiling were covered in old, sedate, expensive looking wood paneling – the type one might expect to see in an early 20thc. English boardroom. On the floor was a massive Bukhara rug (which I was able to recognize at the time due to my weekend employment at a Persian rug auction in the city :upside_down_face:). At the time, I thought that Othmer had, himself, paid for the decor. With Othmer being a major academic star and a money magnet for us, I’ve since wondered if our uni had done up the office for him, as a gift. I don’t believe he needed any enticement to stay on, though. He had options.

How does one like vaporware?

I’m not sure if unique new data — especially the kind that other researchers can benefit from — qualifies as vaporware. The product being pumped out is the data, so…

Reading about her thought process in trying to determine the best way to save both herself and her dog was heartwarming. Most adults wouldn’t have had the presence of mind that she did:
