These two internet searches always lift my mood:

  1. You ever see a cat that sits like this?
    image
Well, turns out there’s a phrase for this in Japanese: “猫+おっさん座り”, which means “Uncle-sitting cat”, or basically “Cat sitting like an old guy”. Anyway, a Google image search for the Japanese phrase will leave you richly rewarded with pics of derpy cats.

  2. A Twitter search for “narwhals are real”. Relish in the childlike wonder.

Dolly Parton Likes to Read by the Fire in Her Pajamas

Is that fire really long-lasting enough and bright enough to read by?

So not surprising; Dolly is all kinds of awesome.

P.S.
Extra, extra, read all about it: I don’t think I’ve thanked you quite enough for bringing this cat sitting like an old man thing into my life.

Thank you!

Yeah, a few of these went on the gifting list and/or the wish list.

This struck me:

When you get to be a certain age, you feel like you’ve seen everything and I learn every day that I’m just starting this journey.

I love that feeling, being surprised/fascinated/illuminated with something new, or that I’d previously ignored/overlooked.* My physics teacher, back in high school, used to say “the day you stop changing is the day you die.”

*(As opposed to being blindsided by something, like at work.** “Surprise! Did you know that a database can fill up? Well it did!” Even then, I feel like that’s how I’ve done some of my best work, although I don’t like approaching it that way.)

**(Oh yeah, tomorrow’s Monday!)

I read that like lines from a Beastie Boys song. Specifically, Intergalactic

Nicholas Kristof published a long-ish investigative piece last weekend about Pornhub and other channels and the children and other non consenting people that get their lives ruined, while the sites profit.
Today he published a follow up:

It’s not a perfect solution, but sweeping changes are now underway at governmental and industry levels because young people had the courage to speak up. And the young lady in the picture has received an outpouring of support to get her life back on track.
Shining a light on problems really can lead to improvements.
