A bird/bat/pterosaur’s wing is actually pretty efficient. At a technological level, it’s just a matter of time before materials catch up with evolution.
Ornithopters are already real. We collect them and fly them. (Tim Birds remain my favorite.)

They’ve been real for some time, just as walking vehicles have been real for some time. But neither are as efficient or reliable as mechanically simpler alternatives like propellers and wheels.
